Scottish Forestry Allocates Over £2 Million for Woodland Expansion

Scottish Forestry is making more than £2 million available to tree nurseries, small forestry businesses and farmers to help them gear up and play their part in creating more woodland across Scotland.

And for the first time, through a new agreement with the UK and Welsh Governments, tree nurseries in England and Wales which supply trees to Scotland will also be able to apply for the funding.

Forestry and wood processing worth £1 billion to economy

Glennon Brothers’ Windymains Sawmill, near Humbie, and Alba Trees, near Gladsmuir, welcomed Martin Whitfield, South Scotland MSP, and Shadow Scottish Secretary Ian Murray MP.

The politicians stopped off at the businesses to see what ‘green prosperity’ looked like on the ground.

Finding plastic-free alternatives to protect young trees

Young trees are often grown in nurseries until they are three to five years old, at which point they are protected for at least five years by plastic tubes.

Planting a tree with plastic guards has a carbon footprint that is at least twice as high as planting a tree without any, even if the guards are collected and recycled.

Brexit Leads Northern Ireland Buyers to Cancel 100,000 Tree Orders

Our CEO Craig Turner was asked to give his thoughts in this Guardian article on the implications of Brexit on our industry. With the Wooland Trust cancelling an order for 22,000 trees due to new regulation will have knock on effects for school and community projects as part of Northern Ireland’s greening project.
