By improving our irrigation strategy, we reduced water use by 54% at our Samuelston site and 19.6% across the business while improving crop quality.
Less Waste, More Recycling
Less than one tonne of waste went to landfill last year. We prioritise prevention, reuse and recycling, and operate Scotland’s first Tube Recycling Hub, we expect to recycle in excess of 70k tubes per annum.
Sustainable Growing
Peat-Free Nursery
Since 2025, every tree grown at Alba is raised in peat-free growing media, reducing environmental impact and supporting sustainable forestry across the UK.
Reducing Chemicals
Our teams track every product used, developing species-specific growing plans and introducing natural alternatives to synthetic chemicals.
Innovation and R&D
We continuously research better growing methods, including microbial fungi-based systems, cork topping for weed control and natural pest management solutions.
Biodiversity and Habitat
We actively enhance biodiversity across all nursery sites, planting trees, hedgerows and woodland corridors. Uss here Our biodiversity projects include planting Populus Nigra (Black Poplar), one of the UK’s rarest native trees, and creating new habitats for pollinators and wildlife.
Community and People
Our Green Team, made up of staff from every department, champions sustainability and social responsibility across the business. We have supported local charities such as Friends of the River Tyne, donated food to the East Lothian Food Bank, and supplied trees for schools.
